…without a doubt the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts School of Dance is ranked one of the highest professional dance training schools in Canada. Mary Jago-Romeril
The Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts embodies a thriving School of Music, Kindermusik School and The School of Dance in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Conservatory was founded in 1887. Expanding its performing arts options, in 1947 the Conservatory established its ballet department under the direction of Juris and Irene Gotshalk who were later instrumental in the development of the National Ballet of Canada. Three years later the ballet department expanded to encompass other forms of dance, this time directed by Gunter Buchta whose group the Buchta Dancers went on to national and international fame.
With an emphasis on small class size, a belief in the importance of individual attention, and a commitment to providing a highly qualified teaching staff, The School of Dance provides a variety of programs for both children and adults.
The School of Dance offers programming in ballet, jazz, modern, character, conditioning, pilates, creative movement, and pre-ballet. Junior and Senior Diploma programs are offered in addition to a Teacher Training Program and a Professional Dance Program. Classes are also offered for senior dancers (aged 50+). The School of Dance utilizes syllabi and offers examinations in association with The Royal Academy of Dance, The Canadian Dance Teachers Association, The Society of Russian Ballet and The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (Cecchetti).
